This was the work that I had hoped PIRSA and GA were going to do after the
August GGIC meeting. Unfortunately it didn't eventuate.
I will be on leave for all of May and involved with the AuScope Roadshow
for most of June, so am unable to progress this until next financial year.
Can I suggest that during May Gilly work with PIRSA, Terry, and Florence
to come up with a draft modified version of the Boreholes model that meets
the PIRSA requirements? In this time period, Simon may be able to assist
Gilly with the process, before he becomes unavailable. Bruce Goleby or
Dale Percival from Geoscience Australia have also indicated that they are
willing to participate to bring in petroleum well expertise.
It may be possible to get agreement on a draft GeoSciML v3.0 with the
GeoSciML comunity prior to their September meeting. This would allow
establishing the PIRSA services as part of a 'testbed' for the new
Borehole model.
Thoughts?

RE: GeoSciML mapping file
The PIRSA borehole database' mapping exercise offers a great starting
point for targeting the required reworking of gsml:Borehole. Bruce already
pointed out some major ones.
We could generate some object diagrams for some real cases define in the
borehole db and see where the major drawbacks are.
Is there any record of the meeting you guys had in Melbourne about
gsml:Borehole?

We need to do a full re-working of gsml:Borehole, with a better set of
requirements as a starting point.
You will recall that all the 'details' were added in that 2 hour meeting
with Jon Huntington in Melbourne.
Not exactly an exhaustive evaluation ...
Best - Simon

Simon,
1. Is
gsml:Borehole/sa:relatedSamplingFeature/sa:SamplingFeatureRelation/sa:target/sa:Specimen/sa:currentLocation/gmd:CI_Address
not allowed at the moment?
2. "The BoreholeDetails/startPoint/BoreholeStartPointCode path does not
look like it would easily capture that logic"
I agree. I suggest that this should be changed to either a numeric value
or a numeric value and BoreholeStartPointCode.
3. Some other isues that have come up as part of the mapping:
3a gsml:drillingMethod (1..1). The drillingMethod may actually vary down
the Borehole (RAB then diamond core then RAB etc). The current model does
not allow this. A simple solution is to change the cardinality to (1..*).
A preferable solution would be to relate individual MappedIntervals to the
different drillingMethods.
3b. A similar case as 2a exists for nominalDiameter, which may also vary
down the Borehole
Cheers

RE: GeoSciML mapping file
1. Greg - you can't just pick fields at random from within ISO 19115.
They have to be valid in the context of the object being described.
There is currently no valid path from gsml:Borehole to
gmd:CI_Address/gmd:administrativeArea.
gsml:Borehole/sa:relatedSamplingFeature/sa:SamplingFeatureRelation/sa:target/sa:Specimen/sa:currentLocation/gmd:EX_GeographicDescription/gmd:geographicIdentifier/gmd:MD_Identifier/gmd:code
is the best we can do. A (sensible) revision of the sampling features spec
would see
gsml:Borehole/sa:relatedSamplingFeature/sa:SamplingFeatureRelation/sa:target/sa:Specimen/sa:currentLocation/gmd:CI_Address/gmd:adminstrativeArea,
as you require, because there are no mandatory fields in CI_Address. If
you want to just put the town, that would be valid.
2. Thanks for explanation of start-depth.
I had not realised that a collar was not necessarily the same as the
drilling start point.
So, it looks like the gsml Borehole model may require some fixing to
accommodate this - the GSML v2 model is here:
http://www.geosciml.org/geosciml/2.0/doc/Images/EAID_6135C407_EC75_417d_B400_877478C4C485.gif
.
The BoreholeDetails/startPoint/BoreholeStartPointCode path does not look
like it would easily capture that logic.
No-one caught this during the GeoSciML review period ...

Subject: FW: GeoSciML mapping file
Hey guys,
Florence and I dived into the PIRSA drill hole mapping file yesterday.
We found some odd GeoSciML properties associated with HEADER FIELD
LIBRARYNAME, STARTDEPTH and ENDDEPTH. In the first column of the mapping
file we propose alternative GeoSciML properties that should be more
relevant with the SA_GEODATA FIELD. Please give us some feedback with
those. Full specification of core library address is overkill - the full
address is available through other sources. Town/suburb should be
sufficient. This was discussed during the mapping exercise.
Simon also reviewed the mapping file and helped us completing the GeoSciML
xpaths.
Some other questions rose as we looked at the SA_GEODATA FIELD. For
example: What is the difference between DD_DRILLHOLE.START_DEPTH and
DC_DRILLING.DRILL_FR, and DD_DRILLHOLE.MAX_DRILLED_DEPTH and
DC_DRILLING.DRILL_TO? Refer attached spreadsheet for comments. We
probably have to consider different cases if the bore hole is vertical or
not-vertical. No - this is legacy non-rigorous field nomenclature, and
actually refers to length along the drill stem.
2 other points: Is there some field in the PIRSA DB defining the unit
system used for the depth and other fields? All depths/lengths are stored
and served in metres. Same question for the projection system used. It is
specified in the mapping file comment that the PIRSA Data are projected in
the GDA97 GDA94 coordinate system, but it might be wrong for data older
than 1997. All XY coordinates to be served will be in GDA94 regardless of
datum of coordinates submitted - the system transforms submitted
coordinates to GDA94. Submitted coordinates will not be exposed.
Cheers
on behalf of Florence and Guillaume.

Rapidly modified spreadsheet attached. I think we need to deliberate
drilling methods rigorously when the boreholes working group is fully
operational.

Greg
I've mapped the Borehole drilling methods to the available GeoSciML
enumeration list.
As you can see there are a number that don't match the GeoSciML.
I have suggested in the comments field what the possible GeoSciML mapping
could be. Could you confirm these, please?
There are some I am unsure of (eg Calweld). If these do not map to any of
the GeoSciML terms, and they are drilling, could you provide a description
for them and I'll try to get the GeoSciML enumeration expanded.

Can you please email me the GeoSciML borehole to SA_Geodata mapping file
