- Not quite. It’s about relating the alteration in a geologic unit to some structure. Only if the unit type is an AlterationUnit would the entire unit be related to an alteration-controlling structure. For instance, alteration in a LithostratigraphicUnit might be only a small feature of the unit as a whole. So I would keep this relation with AlterationDescription, not GeologicUnit. Alternately, I would have to create a GeologicUnitPart/AlterationUnit for the altered unit parts - that may be OK for some, but I don’t think GA’s data would support that.
OK. So the association is between the AlterationDescription and the definingStructure:GeologicStructure.

Hi Ollie,
Hi Bruce,
- Alteration Scale - eg; mm, cm, m, km
What is this used for?
- an indicator of the size of your alteration zone. eg; local vein selvage alteration occurs over centimetres, or mining district alteration zones occur over kilometres. Personally, I’m ambivalent about adding this one, but it’s an attribute used by our geologists.
- Alteration Texture - eg; cockade, colloform, comb, dog tooth, fibrous, bladed, banded, vuggy, saccharoidal, opaline, laminated, massive (Would have to define this well to separate it from AlterationDistribution)
Can the "FabricDescription" class on RockMaterial be used for this when describing the EarthMaterial? Do we need a general "FabricDescription" class associated with GeologicUnit to capture terms like "massive" when applied to the GeologicUnit? (All those who were at Perth in 2004 may now have a deja vu moment!).
- Yes, you could use RockMaterial/FabricDescription for this.
- I wasn’t at Perth, but was the decision made that to describe a fabric in a unit, you have to describe the fabric of the EarthMaterial of the unit? I’m OK with that.
- On a slightly related issue, do we need AlterationDescription associated with a RockMaterial?
- Alteration Controlling Fabric or Structure - eg; foliation, bedding, shearing, faulting, brecciation
This is about relating the GeologicStructure:Foliation to the GeologicUnit using GeologicRelation. I don't believe this has actually been tested as yet. Perhaps it should be tested as part of GeoSciML v2.1 or v 3.0 testing. Any takers?

[Auscope-geosciml] Alteration vocabularies [SEC=UNCLASSIFIED]
Hi Steve,
I’ve attached some lookup tables from GA for hydrothermal alteration that might be added to the weathering vocabularies for AlterationDescription in GeoSciML3.
Also, we use a few additional attributes for describing alteration that the modelling team may be interested in adding to the AlterationDescription class:
- Alteration Scale - eg; mm, cm, m, km
- Alteration Texture - eg; cockade, colloform, comb, dog tooth, fibrous, bladed, banded, vuggy, saccharoidal, opaline, laminated, massive (Would have to define this well to separate it from AlterationDistribution)
- Alteration Controlling Fabric or Structure - eg; foliation, bedding, shearing, faulting, brecciation
Any thoughts?
Cheers,
Ollie
