Ollie it's almost certainly not the fault of oxygen per se, but the way that java applications in general access system and web resources. Case sensitivity in file names and urls is one of the places where windows, unix, java are poorly aligned.

Thanks Gilly and Marcus.  Oxygen strikes again..... I checked that original geologicUnit.xsd schema again in Oxygen and it said that it was valid. >:(

Why does Oxygen validate some things that XMLSpy does not?  Grrrr....

I have fixed the typo in the subversion copy of the schema too.
