A more compelling driver from the viewpoint of the state surveys would be industry showing an interest, and letting the directors know about it. On this front Ryan and I recently had an interesting conversation with Rio, and we urged them to contact the surveys to provide some user pull to balance the technology push.

Dietmar's group are keen to consume WFSs in the app. The problem is getting stable, persistent, reliable, consistent WFS up and running from the data providers within organisation's IT environments.

It has taken 3 years of AuScope funding to get EarthResourceML WFS up and yet to date we only have 2 services live from the data custodians production databases, 3 remotely hosted services (all to be moved to data custodian services by July 2011) and 2 still negotiating with their IT groups (expected to be live by end 2011).

This with a stable model (EarthResourceML 1.1), external funding and developers (AuScope) and Geological Survey Director's support. Apart from the GeoSciML Testbed involvement (GA and GSV) none of the surveys have established GeologicUnit , Fault or Contact WFS.

As for Geochronology, we still don't have a stable model.

Yes I think GPlates is a great driver for establishing these services. However, overcoming each organisations IT hurdles is extremely difficult and time-consuming. It does mean that we have to stabilise GeoSciML development so that applications like GPlates can be modified to consume the services knowing they won't have to keep tinkering due to the services changing. Unfortunately AuScope funding finishes in June, otherwise it would have been a great opportunity to fund GPlates consumption of the various WFSs.

GPlates is one of the main drivers for trying to get an Australian geochronology WFS up and running.

GPlates functionality currently displays a point in space and time as the plate reconstruction is run through time. At the moment Dietmar's groups has to manually reformat and load geochronology data from wherever they can get it, and update manually as new data becomes available.

Combining geology, faults mineral occurrence and geochronology WFS data in a an application that displays the plate movement through time would be even more awesome!

Hi Eric,

We at GA are working with Dietmar Muller's team at Sydney University with the GPlates application, mainly by providing test datasets and GeoSciML web services for them to import into GPlates.

Cheers,

Ollie
