Good to hear – the possibility of actively working with all of these DWGs on a coherent cross-domain infrastructure is very much the motivating factor for putting part of the soil standards work in the context of the OGC.

This will be supported by NZ.

Hi Ollie, Bruce,

We definitely had this in mind when writing the charter.

- Geoscience DWG <-> Hydro DWG: I feel this is something already implicitly in place as several of us are also involved in the hydroDWG.

- GeoScience DWG <-> Ag DWG: there may be less people doing this cross links; mainly NZ (still CSIRO ?). I also hope to get BRGM involved (polluted soils entry). Also, USGS is active in both Hydro and Ag DWGs

To be also added, ESS chairs are willing to have more intense liaison with their ‘sub-DWG’ (hydro, geoscience, ?Ag?…) which could take the form of topics dedicated to at TC under the ESS DWG sessions

I have good hope on having that triangle producing compatible specs

Cheers
Sylvain

Great idea Ollie,
We should have done it yonks ago.
May need to ensure good cross-over and communication with the hydro DWG for groundwater and Ag DWG for soils where all 3 domains should be compatible.

Best of luck.

Cheers

OGC seeks comment on proposed GeoScience Domain Working Group

Contact: info at opengeospatial.org<mailto:info at opengeospatial.org>

19 April 2017: The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC®) seeks comments on the draft charter of a proposed GeoScience Domain Working Group (DWG).

GeoScience encompasses a number of scientific domains focused on providing a better understanding, representation, and - more generally - knowledge of the Earth. These domains include Geology, Geophysics, Hydrogeology, Mineralogy, Seismology, Tomography, and/or Volcanology. Those domains are deeply interrelated and need to be studied together to best provide a global Earth Science System that supports research into, and maintains knowledge of, the Earth’s workings and resources.

The GeoScience Domain Working Group aims to connect people interested in GeoSciences by providing an open forum in which to develop, improve, and promote technologies for GeoScience data description and sharing. To this end, the open forum will encourage collaborative development among participants representing many organizations and communities, and will ensure appropriate liaisons to other relevant working groups, both inside and outside of OGC.

The GeoScience DWG will be a joint OGC and CGI-IUGS<http://mail.opengeospatial.org/lists/lt.php?tid=fR4JAlMAVAEHUx0EAV5USFBVVQQZCAIBDRkNX1oGWQ8AUgICV1ZKVQBWAVVXWwRIBg8PBRkEVF0MGVgDAlYVA1EBVgFTAANUUVUFGVALVlJdVgcEGVIJBlQZDQcFUhUPBFsIGVZbBQZTUQkBBwpTBw> working group. The Commission for the Management and Application of Geoscience Information (CGI) is a working subcommittee of the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS). The group’s main mission is to enable the global exchange of knowledge about geoscience information and systems.

The GeoScience DWG draft charter is available at: https://portal.opengeospatial.org/files/73685. Comments should be sent via email to charter-requests at opengeospatial.org<mailto:charter-requests at opengeospatial.org> and are due by 10 May 2017. The OGC and the SWG welcome all interested parties.

There is currently strong emphasis on topics related to Internet of Things, indoor navigation, Big Data, Linked Data, Mobile Location Services and Smart Cities.

About the OGC

The OGC is an international consortium of more than 525 companies, government agencies, research organizations, and universities participating in a consensus process to develop publicly available geospatial standards. OGC standards support interoperable solutions that ‘geo-enable’ the Web, wireless and location based services, and mainstream IT. OGC standards empower technology developers to make geospatial information and services accessible and useful with any application that needs to be geospatially enabled.
